Prolonged Uncertainty Would Be a Killer for the Port of Halifax

  • The basis for the movement of goods anywhere in the world is time and money. Everytime a container is picked up and moved it costs money. Moving the port across the harbour to Dartmouth does not automatically mean increased efficiency. Containers placed on a flatbed truck and shuffled through the rail cut do not improve efficiency but do improve livability of the downtown.
The rail cut could be in bound for cars from 6 to 9am, outbound for trucks from 9am to 3pm, back to cars until 6pm, then trucks until the next 6am. In this configuration, the railcut may be more appealing.
Too many unknowns need to be made knowns before Halterm should be moved across the harbour.
