My husband is a retired civil servant – when Graham Steele cut the automatic increase to inflation to govt pensions, he did the right thing. Although this step did not personally help us, it helped with the stability of the pension fund. I believe there should be a similar change to the Teachers’ Pension Fund and an expectation that retired teachers pay a portion toward medical coverage. They are reasonable steps.

Too soon to speculate on results..Budgets are really not much more than a ‘sign hung in the window’, it’s delivery that counts. This one doesn’t look too bad for a start but the civil servant aspects are likely to ‘tell the tale’….

It sounded like they started to recognize that the size of government is a “”problem” but their choices of what to cut /eliminate and the way they did it just doesn’t seem to match what the public is saying ,what Ivany is saying , what the rural leaders are saying . Tourism is an export , it returns supposedly $600 or more for every dollar spent . We have been lagging in sales and have allowed a two tier tax system in tourism by not stopping the underground product from avoiding taxes . We say we can double tourism revenues in 10 years but before we figured out how we’ll do that, we start cutting . The value of Ma and Pa’s tourism accommodation business has just been harpooned . That leads to lost summer jobs, lost renovation projects and only advantages the global chain owners in HRM. Economic Development is not well communicated in NS . We have all sorts of groups , some federally funded , some provincial , but try to find on any municipal website an economic development plan with projects progress and budgets to show what they are doing . So yes, the “sound” of the budget was good, but the actions to implement are not good ,especially for rural Nova Scotia .

In”credible beginning”. It is less a matter of government “employee wage restraint”, union or otherwise, than the complete recognition by the Government, that their expenses are too high for the revenue they scrape together (about half via transfers from Ottawa).
Yes, too many are overremunerated – probably at a properly costed three-quarters of all expenditures(!) – but focusing on restraining wages is very shortsighted. Proper-sizing of our Government would be more credible.

Your thoughts are on the mark, and as far as public sector employees it is overdue that they get a wake-up call and face the reality that they have had it better than most private sector workers, and that we as tax payers are fed up with all the extra benefits which their unions have won for them (unchecked) over the years. In addition to above average vacation time “almost a month of FREE TIME is too much” for the working public to subsidize to the public service employees………
