400 teachers a year and how many nurses? Maybe 150 or 200? Disastrous, if you ask me. As well, I’ve heard many seasoned nurses complain that recent graduates are starting work in a hospital not knowing how to stick a needle in a vein.
I think one of the solutions for universities to share administrative services to save money. As well they need to look at possibly divesting themselves of expensive infrastructure (NSCAD is an example). This could potentially free them up for investing in research.
Well is there any surprise that the teachers union pensions are again in Financial Trouble to the Tune of 1.6 billion dollars ? John Buchanan’s government bailed them out to the tune of a Billion. A Government since has done the same. I am sure if we bailed all the Heroin Addicts out every time they mismanaged their finances they would be back to us to get more money for Heroin. Problem is the rest of society out side this orgy of enrichment and entitlement suffers long term. Politicians of all stripes have rewarded truly bad behavior while allowing the inmates to run the prison. This is a group of elites who generally look down on Capitalist Thinking IE Chignecto Central only generating about 350000 dollars in 2010 for non Government funding while holding on to 900000 sq feet of surplus interior space. If any of the constituents of Chignecto Central had such a miserable record worked in Stellarton for Crombie Reit they would be shown the door at the end of the Quarter. Nova Scotia School Boards have over 5 million surplus Sq feet which according to one Financial officer of a school board costs 10.23 per Square foot Annually to maintain. 50 million dollars a year is wasted on Janitors and Maintenance people while teachers in Control could care less about this provinces future. What does a proper school system do with 5 million sq feet of unproductive room ? Toronto’s School Board leased 5 million SQ ft. recently for a company to install Photo Voltaic Solar panels on the roofs of their buildings generating 10 million per year in income. School Boards in Nova Scotia are a absolutely high jacked democratic exercise by Organized labor which installs the “public” representatives to sit down ,shut up and continue the robbery of future generations. Health Care is just as bad. No contributions from the taxpayer should be the rule for public servants typically starting at twice the per capita GDP. Normal people paying the taxes to then pay the salaries of these people don’t have anyone paying the lions share of the pension contributions to then generally flush it down the toilet. This is exactly how Greece , Spain , Italy and other sick man economies got into trouble. Too much Socialism and not enough Capitalism.
