Appraising the Liberals’ First Year

  • Was it not a conflict of interest for Janet Hazelton to be on the Committee for review of MLA compensation and pension plan ? Suddenly she seems very poised for a big reward.

  • Measuring a governments’ performance is not easy when they all avoid giving you any real data in any real every day format that shows what they measure .
Every department should be issuing monthly and annual and historical data on what they earn, what they spend and what they “produce”. Really every municipality should do the same .
We hear “statistics” often, but most come from the federal government .
We can’t tell where we are going if we don’t count where we have been.
We know population is down , but where do we see that on the NS Government website. We “hear” about job from the feds but not on an NS government website. In tourism we count Visitors and room sales every year but you can’t find any real history and any real sign of how much tourism spends every year on what they call marketing . It seems no matter who we elect ,nothing is improving in the way they manage . It’s now or never in a whole number of ways .Take all this wood supply management banter and try to find what that wood produces an now factor in that we are now clear cutting more and more and burning the wood for NSP to “biomass”rather than for pulp or lumber .
    Wow.

  • Well I have never been inclined towards the Liberal party and the last provincial election was no exception.Having said that, I am very strongly inclined to cut the current administration a fair bit of slack for quite a while because I am of the feeling that it came into power to be faced with a very bad , might I say rotten, situation in many, many areas. They seem to adopted and maintained, a firm handle on the task of adjusting the Health Admin. to match reality..On the health care UNION aspect,it appears they they have not mis-stepped yet,at least; this was/is probably especially difficult if,as suspected, some union strategists had gotten influential INSIDE the previous government’s “shot-callers.”….On the ‘BLUENOSE II” mess (which came with the swearing in itself) a suitable approach appears to have been adopted. The Yarmouth Ferry. problem came with the trash left by the previous administration and there appears to be some hope that it can be salvaged..Some misteps appear to have been taken regarding the Teachers so-called upgrading of licenses and the Teachers’ pension problems are yet to be resolved…The issue of FRACKING appears to have been muddled for a start but it is not too late for some clarity in the matter..A more upfront and stronger stance on supporting IVANY , would be nice but it could well come yet as thus far negetivity has not been shown..A rather appropriate stance was taken in the Home For Colored Children issue and the government looks on that one…So All In All, I would be inclined to conclude that …. thus far rates a passing grade but not by a very substantial amount, but there remains a lot of room for improvement and there is some room for optimism…There is a lot of time left to decide voting intentions down the road…

  • Until last year’s election I hadn’t voted Liberal for thirty years. One item made me so angry that I decided to take the plunge: I wanted Efficiency Nova Scotia eliminated and what the Liberals promised was attractive to me. What they delivered was a dog’s breakfast of fudging so that I will pay in a slightly different slot on my power bill. This government’s first year has been a dismal failure.

I noticed that they had no trouble putting through a measure that provides politicians with a pension after serving two years. I guess we know who this government is looking out for. Certainly not the average citizen.

  • Your summary is very fair. If the very first mistake they made were corrected, before its too late, a strenghtening leadership would be conveyed – the economy further weakening February holiday!
