Continuing Success in Tourism is Great, But There are Limits to What it Can Contribute

  • The NS Tourism people haven’t done much to improve their collection of traffic in years . The rooms sold in 2016 are basically even with the 1999- 2000 years so after 16 year we are back to normal ??

  • Unfortunately the numbers do not tell us how many of the arrivals were “tourists” versus family visits. There is a significant difference in the spending habits/ needs between the two categories. More family visitors would partly account for the lower % increase in hotel room nights. With more Nova Scotians moving away family travel should be expected to increase and normally is not influenced by advertising etc.
Another factor that would be informative would be related to the travels of Nova Scotians. For instance were there fewer Nova Scotians travelling within their province and using hotel rooms for overnight stays. More NS travelling outside of the province would be an offsetting negative.
Of course the big elephants in the room will always be there when it comes to the future of tourism, security, Cdn $, and price of energy. Thanks for the information.
