The Cost and Value of Universities

Back to article »

  • Your defence of our Universities is admirable, however does this debt ridden Province of less than a million people really need to support 10 Universities with almost half a billion dollars each year? The last two paragraphs of your article begin to address the issue we should all have regarding the lack of fiscal accountability by these institutions. This week UPEI announced a budget increase of over $5 million in payroll costs alone for the coming year while our own Universities have spent millions fighting court cases over football games and Facebook scandals. Excessive pay demands and over staffing is rampant throughout the University system and there appears to be little oversight by Government to control this prolifigate spending.

    • Thanks Nick. I believe the outcomes agreements are a step toward accountability. I will be adding the template on Monday.

  • Universities are looking after themselves first . It is up to government to have a standard measuring stick that they use as the basis for funding. How does a university give back to the Province, the tax payers ? What research do they do to help the problems the province faces .
