How Do We Get More Local Decision-Making In Health Care?

  • I believe that the model we should be striving for is the Mayo Clinic, a non-profit patient centered hospital system where physicians are paid by salary rather than the per procedure here. The Mayo Clinic model also allows patients to book appointments online, get results with a few days and manage their own health outcomes. If we are going to invest $2 billion for a new hospital etc. we should invite the Mayo Clinic to manage the system.

  • Any organization must have a strong leader
There are no strong leaders within the elected Provincial govt capable of managing the delivery of health care thus we must,as a matter of economic and physical health survival look outside the existing system
This may lead to a variation of “for profit” system as exists in many health plans in other jurisdictionsThe system would have to exist within the ambit of universal care but subject to the realities of accountability
Many within present management have fallen victims to the Peter principle and been promoted to position beyond their capabilities and it is unrealistic in the extreme to expect elected personnel to administer the incompetents.
    Politics is a popularity contest
    Managing a business is not
