Great column today. You are right on with the “allowing more immigrants and
international students than we can provide for” is a huge disservice to them and Canada. One would hope someone pays attention to this. When you hear Justin speak of this you want to scream.
When still living in the US I was involved with a group who arranged for pre
manufactured housing built offsite and then delivered to the site and put together.
It worked very well. I think they are doing this in Norway a lot now.
Informative article. Thank you. Your comment regarding factory manufactured building is the way forward and should be promoted and extended to all housing. This has gain much popularity in the US and is expanding in Canada. NS has companies participating in this developing sector. Home ownership in Canada is becoming unattainable for most and the cost efficiency of prefab homes at scale, would benefit all housing types with minimal government involvement.
Another excellent article in today’s Chronicle Herald. You do a good job boiling these issues down to a manageable level. Of course each point is more complicated in reality but in order for society to engage we need bite-size pieces that people can understand. That’s what you’re good at. Thank you.

Apropos your article this morning, perhaps Federal and Provincial governments in Canada should seriously consider a Yimby strategy for the
long run approach to our housing problem. It appears that progressives are having a positive influence in progressive jurisdictions.

Well written, as usual.
The short term rentals (“STR”) issue also adds to the problem. In our relatively small R1 neighbourhood, there are several homes that are now STR’s that were previously family occupied.
