Hi Bill:
Interesting. If a new mayor continues the current planning process for the expected growth of HRM, especially on the peninsula, aside from an increasing tax burden, we can expect massive traffic congestion and increasing pollution from idling vehicles. Who is in charge, the mayor and council, or the cycling lobby?
“Civic counsellors do not belong to party groupings. ” The candidate reoffering in Sackville Beaver Bank is the President of the Provincial PC Association in that same area. Let’s not kid people Bill.
Kevin thanks for this. MY text would have been better phrased “In Nova Scotia municipal counsellors are not organized in political party groupings. Nor do candidates for mayor represent a politicalparty”
Mike Savage had many Conservative supporters for his first civic campaign.
There’s an election going on? Where are all the signs?
Between Indian Harbour where I live and north up Peggys’ Cove Road there are no signs. No signs: no election.
I brought this matter up with Pam Lovelace and Danielle Barkhouse my MLA. Apparently rules are such that election signs will be taken down by Public Works as they are not allowed, and Pam sent me the rule book on that matter. I tried to make a case that people have to be informed and not all are like me: a news hound that watches news 3 times a day, have an app for CBC news on my iPad, and of course read the paper. MOST people do not do these things and elect to find out about life through their smart phones.
A case in point, my wife hired a high school student to do some gardening work. I asked her if she was old enough to vote, but she said no. Then the clincher, “why, is there an election going on?” Ha ha.
When we moved here in 2009, the NDP were vying for the government job (Dexter’s group) and they won. I saw the signs, recognized it as an election, and dug in a bit to see who I should vote for. (It wasn’t NDP!) The signs were EVERYWHERE, private property, unknown property, government owned ditches, big signs, little signs.
Of course I know there’s an election and not only contributed to Lovelace’s campaign I have a sign (the only one on Peggy’s Cove Road) on my garbage bin. I like her because she is a woman (curtail your laughter), because I recall some strong women in politics like Margaret Thatcher, Smith and Notley in Alberta, Clinton in the USA (she should be president) and they seem more focused on their jobs than flying around the country just for the plane fare and free food. They don’t have illicit affairs like powerful men.
I do like Fillmore because of his federal experience and ties. Mason is a moron and I won’t vote for him. I once sent him a letter denouncing bike lanes and scourge of bikes that prevent people who pay for the roads (car and truck owners) to be able to travel swiftly and safely. He wants Halifax to be like Amsterdam which is ridiculous on so many levels.
So….these would be Mayors pledge to do what their much admired former Mayor could not do. Talk is cheap!! Of course, they will all need more money which they magically assume will come from the Province (they keep forgetting, they are the same tax payers!!!) I will be looking for someone with new ideas that don’t involve bankrupting me.

Anyway, good article.

My only minor quibble is the delusional statement that municipal elections are non partisan.
Both Savage and Fillmore, as failed Federal MPs, took a reduction in salary to be Mayor of HRM.
Do you really think they stop being Liberals?
Do you actually expect intelligent readers who remember every Tory or Liberal Mayor of Halifax and recall their obvious conflict of interest?
Including sitting HRM councilors like my friend Hendsbee…. who makes more money now than he did as MLA!
Haven’t you noticed Hendsbee’s decisions always favor Tory business on the Eastern Shore?
I rest my case.
